Our pierced ear wires are gold filled, gold plated, sterling silver, brass or niobium. The ear wire material used is in the earring description. Brass and niobium are non-allergenic for most people.
Gold filled. A layer of 14K gold bonded with heat and pressure to a base metal such as brass.
Gold plated. A thin layer of gold is electroplated to a base metal such as steel or brass.
Vermeil. (Pronounced vermay or vermail) 22 or 24K gold plating over sterling silver.
Sterling silver. A mixture of pure silver and copper. The copper gives the silver strength. The standard is at least 92.5% silver so you may see the .925 stamp on some sterling silver items.
Bali silver. Sterling silver beads, clasps and other jewelry components hand made on the island of Bali.
Thai silver. 99.9% pure fine silver usually hand made by the Karen Hill tribe of Thailand.
Brass. Combination of zinc and copper. It can darken with age.
Niobium. Non-allergenic metal. The colors we use for our ear wires are steel gray and dark copper.
Czech crystal. Very high quality glass beads in the form of pressed glass and heat polished beads made in the Czech Republic.
Resin. Liquid plastic is mixed with color, poured into containers, hardened, hand cut and shaped into beads in a variety of shapes and sizes. Resin is lightweight, non-toxic, and the color doesn't fade or run. Some resin looks like glass or mimics amber, carnelian, etc.
Swarovski crystal. Brand name for precision cut crystal made by a company started by Austrian Daniel Swarovski in 1892. This crystal has exceptional sparkle and color and is used in the finest jewelry.
Semi-precious. We use this term on our website to mean natural stones and beads other than diamonds, rubies, or emeralds. Some semi-precious beads are color treated.
Kum-bo. Fusing of gold on silver.
Reticulation. High heat on metal that produces a rippled effect unique to each piece.
Chain mail. Small gold or silver rings linked together in a pattern to create various types of chain effects - patterns are based on armor worn by knights in the middle ages.
Wire wrapping. Wire strips wrapped around objects in a regular or free form way.
Patinas. Change in the color of a metal due to natural aging or by soaking the metal in various solutions to produce an aged look.
• Store handmade jewelry carefully. Keep each piece in it’s own bag, compartment, box or pouch especially when traveling.
• Moisture in the air causes tarnish on metals. To limit tarnishing, it is best to keep sterling silver in airtight packaging such as a ziplock bag.
• Remove jewelry when bathing, cleaning, swimming or using beauty products. Chemicals can damage jewelry components especially organic beads like amber, coral, jade, pearls and turquoise.
• Clean jewelry after each use by wiping with a soft dry cloth or a cloth slightly dampened with a mild soap and water solution. Do not soak jewelry in water or jewelry cleaner. Do not use an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner. Do not use abrasives such as toothpaste to clean your jewelry.
• If silver jewelry does tarnish, use a soft tarnish removing cloth such as Sunshine.
